Cardio-Chelate™ is a combination of nutrients that are designed as an oral alternative to the intravenous (IU) chelation therapy. Chelation utilizes a man-made amino acid called Ethylene-Diamine-Tetra-Acetic-Acid (EDTA), developed during the late 1940’s, to remove lead and other dangerous toxic metals from the body. The word chelation (key-LAY-shun) is derived from the Greek word “chele” meaning claw. Like a claw, EDTA binds tightly to free-floating metal ions in the bloodstream and then forms a chemical bond that facilitates the removal of these complexes before they interfere with normal metabolism or enter into an undesirable chemical reaction. In the 1950’s, doctors using EDTA chelation noticed the significant benefits to cardiovascular health. Between 1956 and 1960, subjects showed an impressive 87% improvement in cardiovascular health following a series of oral chelation regimens. A recent study indicated that EDTA treatment of lead poisoning reduced lead blood levels. It was later theorized that as EDTA removes unwanted toxic metals, it simultaneously helps to loosen and remove abnormally located mineral deposits, such as calcium from arterial plaque. It is important to note that some essential nutrients such as calcium, iron and copper, can become abnormally arranged when they are exposed to oxygen and stimulate free radical damage in arterial cells. As these complexes gradually accumulate with cholesterol they contribute to plaque buildup in the artery wall. Chelation, using EDTA, has shown the unique ability to bind to many of the minerals involved in free radical pathology. In the early 1980’s, 2,870 patients at the Clinical Tuffik Mattar in Sao Paulo, Brazil were treated with EDTA chelation. The results were impressive with 89% of all treated patients showing marked or good improvement in cardiovascular health. Also in the early 1980’s Dr. Richard Casdorph, then Chief of Medicine at Long Beach Community Hospital and assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, observed similar results in patients with cardiovascular concerns and reduced cerebral blood flow. All of the patients in his studies showed significant clinical improvement in cardiovascular health as well as enhanced blood flow. One study suggests oral EDTA as an effective chelator for removing toxic minerals from the body. According to some doctors, the absorption and effectiveness of one month’s consumption of an oral chelation product produces effects similar to one three-hour intravenous chelation session. In addition,an oral product such as this combination with EDTA is more cost effective for patients who do not have the means to afford intravenous treatments. To date, EDTA remains a safe and effective chelating agent for the removal of abnormally located minerals and unwanted toxic metals. At low doses, it is FDA approved, and is widely used by the food packaging industry to preserve flavor and help to delay spoilage and rancidity. Since EDTA is a nonspecific chelator, it can also remove certain essential minerals from the body. Therefore, it may be advisable to supplement with a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement (taken at least 2-3 hours away from taking EDTA supplement), containing ample amounts of zinc, potassium, magnesium and calcium. While EDTA stands alone in its ability to remove toxic metals and abnormally metabolized minerals from the body, its effects may be enhanced by including Vitamin C, MSM (Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane) and NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine). These nutrients are vital for supporting the liver during the detoxification process. MSM and NAC are precursors to glutathione, a powerful free radical scavenger involved in the liver’s detoxifying enzyme system. Vitamin C is a proven antioxidant and has been shown to support cardiovascular health.
